Premières vacances de bébé au ski : tout savoir !

From what age can you take your baby to the mountains?

Before planning your ski trip with your baby, there are a few medical recommendations to consider. We tell you right away, climbing Everest or Mont Blanc are forbidden for toddlers. In fact, doctors advise not to climb to more than 1,700 meters above sea level before 15 months. Remember, we choose a station that is not too high to guarantee baby (and you!) a peaceful stay.

Raise smoothly

The pressure created by altitude can be painful for your baby. To help him, plan breaks when you get in the car (between 1200 and 1400 m above sea level for example). Then, consider having him suckle with either a bottle or a pacifier. Babies don't swallow like adults. This system will prevent potential earaches, such as during an airplane takeoff!

Preparing baby's suitcase for the mountains

Who says snowy place and negative temperature, says adapted clothing! Bring warm clothes and several layers (bodysuit, sweater, sweater, long sleeve T-shirt, jumpers, tights), sleeping bag, angel's nest, mittens, hats... Outside, cover your child well. Inside, also remember to undress him so that he does not roast... In a previous article, we explain how to tell if your baby is too hot or too cold and how to dress him at night.

Watch out for the sun in the peaks

Babies' eyes are sensitive and the sun's reflection is strong because of the snow. Think of sunglasses. Opt for an anti-UV sunscreen model. Also protect his face with sun protection adapted to toddlers.

In the mountains: stroller or baby carrier?

Learn about your future vacation spot. Is it accessible by car, is it a small town with sidewalks or on the contrary a hamlet with snowy trails? In any case, the baby carrier can be useful in order to go for a walk with your hands free. In this article, we tell you everything about baby carriers and baby carriers. Some ski resorts offer three-wheel snow pushchairs for rent, which are very practical when you are traveling. Again, ask the tourist office or the sports shops in your mountain resort.

Stay hydrated, even more so in the mountains

And yes, in the mountains, the air is dry inside, as well as outside. Between heated homes, wearing warm and sometimes technical clothing, babies and adults quickly dehydrate in the peaks. So, a quick reminder to stay well hydrated:

  • Drink water regularly (bottle, bottle, etc.)
  • Moisturize baby skin with appropriate creams in order to avoid dryness, itching and tightness of the skin.

Anticipate your childcare mode

You want to hit the slopes, but what are you going to do with Junior? Anticipate how to care for your child when skiing. Sometimes, the Piou Piou clubs or daycare centers are taken by storm... Find out well before your trip. Daycares generally accept babies from 4 months of age. Note that it is strongly recommended not to ski with your child in a baby carrier.

Preventing future injuries

Finally, our final recommendation: in addition to carrying a good first aid kit, find out about doctors and medical emergencies at your vacation spot.

Here are the essentials for a baby pharmacy kit:

  • Paracetamol: in case of fever.
  • Soothing gel or chamomile type (homeopathy): in case of teething.
  • Rehydration solutions: in case of diarrhea
  • Antidiarrheal: relieve your baby's colic.
  • Physiological serum: multi-use.
  • moisturizer
  • Arnica: in case of bruise or hump.
  • Antiseptic: in case of wounds.
  • Bandages
  • Baby nose
  • Thermometer
  • Bandage
  • Pair of small scissors
  • Cotton square

Have a nice stay in the mountains!
