Everything you need to know about babywearing and baby carriers with Sabrina from Nova Mum

Baby carrying has been practiced since the dawn of time, across the world. Beyond the practical aspect, physiological carrying meets the instinctive needs and development of infants. It also makes it possible to create a valuable bond between parents and their child. In order to learn a little more about babywearing and baby carriers, we went to meet Sabrina, babywearing instructor and founder of Nova Mom. The mother of three explains to us all the advantages of this practice and how to choose a baby carrier.

Charlie Crane How can babywearing help parents and babies?

Sabrina: Babywearing makes it possible to meet the basic needs of the child: to be reassured, to be in contact with his parents. In fact, it provides benefits that intertwine between the baby and his parents. Babies are born without instructions and parents must learn to manage this new being, in addition to daily life. In theory, when you welcome a newborn, you are supposed to do nothing for the first three months of the babies. It's unrealistic, because we have billions of things to do! Porting therefore allows you to have a baby serene and in contact with his parent... who has his hands free. It's freedom! Carrying your baby should be a pleasure. In the end, when we meet the needs of babies, we avoid situations where we are helpless, especially for the first children and the first parent. We are even more confident in ourselves and in our parenting abilities.

Charlie Crane We often hear about physiological carriage, what is it?

Sabrina: Physiological carrying means that we will respect the motor development of the infant. We will put our baby in a position that will respect his body and his morphology, starting with his spine. In a sling, the baby should have a round back, the thighs supported, and the knees are higher than the hips. Wearing well gives children a good foothold in their body in terms of psychomotor development.

Charlie Crane What is skin-to-skin?

Sabrina: Skin to skin means finding pure sensations! You put your baby against your chest without clothes or fabric between you. It's the fun, the reassurance, the hugs, the endorphins that make you happy and the attachment. The skin-to-skin technique is beneficial in starting breastfeeding. This method is also recommended for premature babies.

Charlie Crane Sling, preformed baby carrier, headbands... there are many models, how do you choose your first baby carrier?

Sabrina: All these means of carrying form a toolbox that should not be hesitated to fill out. At birth, I recommend a sling or a sling, which are the most physiological to respect the baby's morphology. It is good to have two carrying systems, in case of a problem, such as a baby who has vomited on his sling and cannot be used before the next wash... Then, baby carriers are recommended as long as the baby knows how to sit alone, because he has the pelvis opening required to accommodate a baby carrier between his legs. He also has the energy to carry himself. Headbands are a great way to carry as an extra layer. The parent can also just use a headband and wear the child on their hip.

Charlie Crane What if a baby doesn't like to be carried?

Sabrina: In case of difficulties, consult a babywearing instructor. Parents may be missing out on something, especially with a GERD baby who is trying to be straight because he is in pain! My third child had severe GERD, so I had to grope around in order to adopt the right way to carry him. The workshops allow you to make adjustments and... to free your voice. We enjoy time for ourselves, whether during pregnancy or after. I recommend doing it to both parents.

Charlie Crane What would you like to say to new parents?

Sabrina: Trust yourself and listen to your little voice... Don't listen to grandma! If you want to hold your baby in your arms, do it, you are legitimate. During pregnancy, you can quickly become an infant. After giving birth, you are alone. When we say that it takes a village to raise a child, it's true. Today, we build our village ourselves with our loved ones, our friends... but they don't know everything. Let's free up the talk about parenting difficulties to feel less alone.
